HYANNIS – As the holiday season accelerates, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is urging residents to ship any gifts or other packages soon.
“Last year was really a wake-up call for us. COVID has really changed the way people use the mail. Instead of just sending packages and gifts in the mail, people ordered everything from groceries to toilet paper to avoid a trip to the store and volumes exploded, ”said Postal Service Strategic Communications Specialist Steve Doherty .
“This year we started just after the last holiday season to prepare for this one. And we are ready.
Doherty said postal service upgrades since 2020 include 122 new parcel sorting machines across the country and aggressive hiring campaigns throughout the year to be ready before vacation volume increases.
According to USPS officials, those wishing to give greeting cards and gifts to family and friends in the contiguous United States by December 25 must send the packages no later than Wednesday, December 15 s ‘They are considering using USPS Retail Ground Service.
For those using the service’s first class mail and priority mail options, shipping can wait until Friday, December 17 or Saturday, December 18, respectively.
For those who send packages at the end of the season, the Priority Mail Express service remains an option as long as the package is sent before December 23.
Doherty said residents can help with the mailing process by following USPS policies and recommendations.
“Send early. Make sure you have everything you are sending in a good, sturdy box with packing tape, and make sure there is a good, legible label with the address, including postcode and all of that information. that will help him get there faster, ”Doherty said.
